How do you turn a 200-year-old gunpowder works into an explosive visitor experience?

For more than 200 years, gunpowder was produced in Frederiksværk for the Danish army. At KRUDT, visitors get up close to the production process, where saltpeter, sulfur, and charcoal were transformed into explosive black powder — a process that was as dangerous as it was vital.

Yoke has been responsible for the entire project, from concept to implementation. We designed and developed all installations across the production houses, allowing visitors to follow the transformation of raw materials, watch the old machines at work, and understand the life-threatening conditions the workers faced. The risk of explosions can still be read in the landscape itself — in protective embankments and tall trees that once caught debris when accidents occurred.

Alongside the installations, Yoke created the overall visual identity for the museum — typography, color palette, illustrations, and iconography — tying every part of the visitor experience together into one coherent narrative.
